Concept Brief
This passion project reimagines the visual identity for El Peñol, a Colombian restaurant located in Boston, Massachussetts, known for its rich flavors and welcoming atmosphere. The rebrand blends warm colors, beautiful typography, and cultural symbolism to reflect the heart of Colombian cuisine. The result is a lively, approachable identity that honors heritage while inviting new guests to the table.
The Heart Was There. The Visuals Weren’t.
El Peñol is a Colombian restaurant in Boston with real soul — the kind of place where the food speaks and the atmosphere wraps around you.
The problem? Their branding didn’t say any of that. Their existing visuals, including a lengthy, visually inconsistent menu, felt disconnected from the warmth and cultural richness guests encounter the moment they walk through the door. This rebrand was an opportunity to give El Peñol a visual identity that finally matches the experience they’ve always delivered.
The Solution
The rebrand centers on a visual identity that feels as alive as the food on the plate. A warm, Colombian color palette — deep reds, golden ambers, dark blue, and natural kraft tones — replaced the previous visual inconsistency with a language that immediately reads as inviting and culturally grounded.
Keeping the iconic silhouette of La Piedra del Peñol anchors the logomark, giving the brand a distinct symbol rooted in Colombian identity. From the storefront awning to staff aprons, every touchpoint was redesigned to feel cohesive, intentional, and proud of where it comes from.
The menu — one of the most visible pain points — was reimagined with clear typographic hierarchy, structured sections, and decorative details drawn from traditional Colombian craft and textile patterns. Takeaway cups, bags, and napkins carry the identity into guests’ hands long after they leave the table.
The result is a brand system that doesn’t just look better — it tells the right story. Warm, rooted, and welcoming, El Peñol’s new identity finally matches the experience that’s been there all along.
A Brand Doesn’t Stop at the Front Door
And neither did this one. Extending the identity to social media meant El Peñol could show up digitally with the same warmth and personality it delivers in person. The refreshed Instagram presence brings the new visual system to life in the scroll — bold typography, rich food imagery, and a consistent voice that says this is a place worth visiting.
This project was a reminder that great branding isn’t about making something look pretty. It’s about making sure that wherever someone encounters you — a takeaway bag, a menu, a post on their phone — they feel the same thing. For El Peñol, that feeling is home.
